The park’s location near the towns of Shercock and Carrickmacross, specifically at Magheracloone and Kingscourt, makes it a perfect gateway to explore the natural splendors of Ireland’s Ancient East. Legends say that Cuchullain, the famed Gaelic warrior, once rested in these woods during his battles against the armies of Queen Maeve of Connaught. The lands were later owned by the O’Reilly family until the end of the 16th century and subsequently acquired by Thomas Fleming, who built Flemings Castle. While the ruins of the castle still stand, they echo the tales of times long past.
The park was developed into a forest park in the early 1970s by the Irish Forest Service and has since become a sanctuary for diverse wildlife and a wide variety of flora. The forest is predominantly made up of oak and ash, with an understory rich in hazel, holly, and rhododendron. Throughout the seasons, the ground dazzles with snowdrops, bluebells, wood anemones, foxgloves, and an array of ferns, creating a rich tapestry of color and life.
