Castle Lake Walks: A Tranquil Escape in Bailieborough, Co Cavan

Situated just outside Bailieborough on the Shercock Road (R178), Castle Lake offers picturesque walking trails that cater to both casual strollers and avid hikers seeking a serene retreat into nature. The area, well-known for its scenic beauty and tranquil atmosphere, is perfect for hiking, running, walking, and even cycling beside the enchanting lakes and through lush woodlands.

The walking trails at Castle Lake begin and end at a conveniently located car park on the lakeshore. As you follow the path with the lake to your left, you can choose between a shorter loop or a longer 6.5 km trail. The shorter route involves taking a left at a crossroads along the path, looping around the lake for a quick and refreshing walk. The longer route continues straight, passing by historical sites such as the graves of the Marist brothers who once resided in Bailieborough Castle, adding a touch of historical intrigue to your walk.

Further along the longer trail, you’ll cross a small river and reach a T-junction. Taking a right, you’ll pass an old foundry and then retrace your steps, crossing back over the river but continuing straight towards the Bog Lough on your right. Eventually, you’ll turn left, heading back towards Castle Lake, keeping it on your left and passing a fairy fort situated above the pump house, enhancing the magical feel of the walk.

Castle Lake not only boasts rich historical significance—highlighted by memorials and the remnants of Bailieborough Castle, built by William Bailie in the early 17th century—but also offers a peaceful haven for wildlife enthusiasts and families alike. With two large, safe lakes and well-maintained jetties, it’s an excellent spot for fishing, kayaking, and even camping. The woodlands around the lake are teeming with wildlife, making it an ideal location for nature watching.

For first-time visitors, the northernmost car park is recommended as it features a map of the walks and a coffee hut for a convenient refreshment stop after a delightful two-hour exploration. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful walk, a vigorous run, or a family outing, Castle Lake in Bailieborough is a beautiful destination year-round, particularly from June through August, offering well-marked trails and an escape from the everyday hustle.
